2012 Review of Gas Prices in the WEM

Background: The annual Review of Energy Price Limits uses information on gas prices in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) as an input variable. The IMO engaged ACIL Tasman, an independent consultant, to assist the IMO in undertaking a review of Gas Prices in the WEM to feed into the 2012 Review of Energy Price Limits. This included:

• considering the impact of the proposed carbon price on gas prices in the WEM during the 2012/13 Financial Year;  
• updating information on the likely gas prices faced by gas fired electricity generators in the WEM in the 2012/13 Financial Year, to be used in the 2012 Review of Energy Price Limits; and 
• recommending a gas price range to apply for the 2012 Review of Energy Price Limits (including ranges for gas commodity costs, gas transport costs and gas load factors as appropriate).
