IMO Training Courses

The IMO training program provides a series of courses on Western Australia’s Wholesale Electricity Market. This training program is tailored for existing and potential Market Participants and the companies that service them. The courses cover the operational aspects of the Wholesale Electricity Market and have been broken into four half-day sessions.The courses currently offered are:

Market Overview

This course provides a high level overview of the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) and its mechanisms. No prior knowledge of the WEM is necessary to attend this course. The course covers:

  • Basic Introduction to Electricity
  • South West Interconnected System
  • Market Mechanisms
    • Energy Market
    • Reserve Capacity Market
  • Market Participant Interfaces
  • Market Rules

Market Operations and the Short Term Energy Market (STEM)

An in-depth introduction to the Energy Market and the price-setting mechanisms. Attendees will explore the STEM and Balancing Markets in detail. It is expected that attendees would have a prior knowledge of the WEM or have been to the Market Overview course.

The course covers:

  • Scheduling and Trading Day
  • Bilateral, STEM and Balancing
  • STEM Auction
  • Balancing Price Determination

Reserve Capacity Mechanism

The Reserve Capacity Mechanism is designed to incentivise the investment in new capacity in Western Australia. This course will outline the Reserve Capacity Mechanism, introducing the concepts of how Market Participants are assigned capacity credits and how the obligation for these credits is recovered from Market Customers. This course is essential for all new and existing investors in Western Australian capacity.

Non-STEM Settlements
